Located within the Department of Medicine at UCT, CLII is dedicated to TB research, treatment, training and prevention in Southern Africa. Numerous HIV/TB/COVID-19 research projects are conducted by CLII at various Cape Town sites.

Community Health Worker Post at the University of Cape Town-Centre for Lung Infection and Immunity

In addition to screening and recruiting participants for the trial, the incumbent will support them during the trial.

Essential Requirements

  • National Senior Certificate or equivalent in Grade 12
  • WorkWork experience in healthcare
  • Expertise in recruiting
  • TB/HIV/COVID-19 terminology knowledge is essential
  • It is necessary to have a driver’s license (Code 10)
  • Having a good understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • An understanding of South African languages and fluency in English
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and the Internet; an understanding of a Data Management System would be advantageous.
  • Ability to manage time well, communicate effectively, and have good interpersonal skills
  • An attitude of professionalism and customer centricity is required
  • Clearance of credit and criminal records

Responsibilities include (but not limited to)

  • Participants are recruited, screened, and consented to participate in the study
  • Keeping study participants up-to-date (attending appointments)
  • Make sure medication packets are labeled correctly
  • Participant medication must be taken at the prescribed time
  • Ensure that participants who have missed appointments receive home visits
  • In case of any irregularities, keep the Registered Nurse informed
  • Data collection, data entry, and data verification – questionnaires, data entry, and data verification
  • Complete participant progress reports according to requirements and maintain a database of participant information
  • During the screening process, provide participants with education and support
  • Participant education on medication, research, TB/HIV/COVID-19, and adherence
  • Deliver and/or collect participants and/or documents as directed by the line manager
  • Transport specimens to the appropriate laboratories in the correct manner.
