About Gibela Transport Rail

Gibela Transport Rail, established in 2013, is a black economic empowerment company and a consortium composed of French rail giant Alstom and South Africa’s Ubumbano Rail.

Gibela holds a substantial R51-billion contract with the South African government to produce 600 trains for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). This contract encompasses train manufacturing, technical support, and the production and supply of spare parts.

Today, state-of-the-art X’trapolis MEGA commuter trains are being manufactured at Gibela’s remarkable R1-billion factory in South Africa’s Ekurhuleni metropolis.

Gibela’s project will create 1,500 direct jobs at its peak and thousands of indirect jobs through the supply chain over a ten-year period.

In line with its contractual obligations to PRASA, Gibela is actively training thousands of historically disadvantaged South Africans, with a particular focus on women, in technical skills that benefit both Gibela and the broader manufacturing industry.
