About the #MatricUngazibulali Campaign

Genesis of the Campaign

The #MatricUngazibulali (Anti-Suicide) Campaign was initiated in 2019 and is now in its fifth year of existence. It emerged in response to a concerning trend of young individuals taking their own lives due to the overwhelming pressure of failing their Grade 12 exams.

Why We Started the Campaign

There’s a critical need for intervention and public awareness, especially for Grade 12 learners, to understand that failure is not the end. We aim to address the mindset of young individuals who may struggle with academic disappointment and may even contemplate suicide.

Equally important is the guidance and enlightenment of parents who may be dealing with this issue.

Objectives of the Campaign

The primary objective of our campaign is to inspire, inform, and empower Grade 12 students who didn’t pass their Matric exams, as well as their parents. We want to raise awareness about ways to improve Matric results, offer career guidance, and provide insight for those unsure about their career paths.

Additionally, we aim to garner public support for learners pursuing higher education, particularly in terms of financial assistance.

Target Audience

Our campaign is designed to reach Grade 12 learners, parents of Grade 12 students, the general public of South Africa, and various stakeholders within the Department of Basic and Higher Education.

The Overarching Message

Receiving a failing grade in Grade 12 may be challenging, but it’s not the end of the world. With determination and hard work, success is achievable. #MatricUngazibulali.

Campaign Coverage

Our campaign has a national scope and has garnered national media attention.

Media Platforms and Channels

We utilize local and national radio stations, newspapers, television stations, and various social media platforms for our media distribution.

Value Proposition of the Campaign

The campaign is rooted in valuing life and promoting access to quality education. It emphasizes the importance of love, support, and kindness.
