This bursary aims to support young black women in pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies in maritime-related fields, fostering success in their careers within the oceans economy.
ABOUT SAIMI
Established in 2014, the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) serves as the apex maritime institute in South Africa.
A collaborative effort led by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and Nelson Mandela University (NMU), SAIMI partners with various stakeholders to enhance the contribution of the maritime sector to the South African and African economies.
SAIMI’s key responsibilities include advocacy, promoting the maritime sector, coordinating education and training, and serving as a knowledge hub on maritime matters.

Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary Programme 2024
Named in honor of Ms. Sindiswa Nhlumayo, the former Executive Head of the Centre for Maritime Excellence at SAMSA, this bursary is dedicated to young women from previously disadvantaged groups, providing them with opportunities to pursue maritime-related careers. Ms. Nhlumayo played a crucial role in skills development, research promotion, and economic opportunities within the maritime sector. Her notable achievements earned her recognition and accolades.
WHAT THE BURSARY COVERS
The Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary offers comprehensive support to its beneficiaries:
- Full Academic Bursary: Covers tuition fees and textbooks.
- Subsidized Accommodation and Meal Allowances: Up to a specified amount, as set by the funder, the National Skills Fund (NSF).
- Participation in Organized Bodies: Beneficiaries have the opportunity to join organizations like Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association South Africa (WISTA-SA) and other women-centric bodies in science.
- Attendance at SAIMI-Hosted Conferences: Beneficiaries can participate in SAIMI-hosted conferences and selected local maritime events.
- Networking and Empowerment: SAIMI will establish partnerships with organizations supporting women in maritime, facilitating networks to empower and support beneficiaries in their career journeys.
