Software Engineering Apprenticeship 2024 Program of Shoprite

As a Software Engineering Apprentice, you will work closely with the software development teams to design, implement, and test cutting-edge software solutions for the Shoprite Group.

Your role will involve supporting the development, deployment, and maintenance of software applications while participating in code reviews and other software development processes.

Job Objectives

  1. Support Agile Development: Collaborate in cross-functional, agile software development teams to understand and meet software development requirements, ensuring high-quality software solutions.
  2. Coding and Programming: Work alongside Senior and Lead Software Developers/Engineers to develop innovative technologies within a large, distributed computing environment.
  3. Software Application Development: Assist in designing, developing, and testing software applications using best coding techniques and methodologies.
  4. Continuous Learning: Demonstrate a commitment to learning and improving within the team, seeking opportunities to innovate and optimize software solutions.
  5. Utilize Technological Resources: Leverage available technological resources to create solutions using coding techniques and methodologies.
  6. Best Practices: Learn and apply software development standards and best practices for coding, unit testing, code reviews, and more.
  7. Maintenance and Integration: With guidance from Senior Developers, maintain and support existing software applications and collaborate with other IT and business teams to integrate software solutions with existing systems.
  8. Software Development Lifecycles: Support and participate in Software Development Lifecycles (SDLC) to deliver high-quality software.
  9. Stay Updated: Keep up with emerging software development principles, designs, technologies, and coding standards.
  10. Community Involvement: Actively participate in Software Development Community of Practice sessions and engage in relevant learning and development channels.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 certificate.
  • Diploma/ Degree in Computer Science, Software/Computer Engineering, Mathematics, IT, or a related field, or in the final year of relevant qualification completion.

Experience

  • Exposure to distributed, multi-tiered systems, algorithms, and relational databases (e.g., SQL, MySQL).
  • Proficiency in one or more high-level programming languages (e.g., C#, Java, Python, Golang, C, C++, PHP, etc.).
  • Familiarity with OOP and SOLID programming or design principles.
  • Knowledge of software development tools such as Git, JIRA, or Agile methodologies.
  • Exposure to Linux toolset and Microsoft Operating systems and/or scripting (e.g., Bash or PowerShell).
  • Experience with JavaScript Frameworks (e.g., Angular, React, Vue.js, etc.).
  • Familiarity with cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP).

Knowledge and Skills

  • Computer systems savvy with a basic understanding of key concepts and facts related to IT.
  • High level of self-motivation and drive to achieve and exceed goals.
  • A curious and willing-to-learn attitude, actively seeking new learning opportunities.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey technical concepts effectively.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Creativity and innovation, with a unique problem-solving approach.
  • Use of data to investigate problems, detect patterns, and extrapolate insights.
  • Stay updated on the latest research and developments in software engineering and adjacent fields.
  • Demonstrates integrity and takes accountability for actions and mistakes.
