Duties and Responsibilities
As an intern, your duties and responsibilities will include:
- Shadowing an experienced South African Sign Language Interpreter to gain exposure to educational interpreting.
- Attending South African Sign Language Interpreter meetings on campus to familiarize yourself with terminology and the role of educational Sign Language Interpreters.
- Entering into a mentorship agreement with an advanced educational South African Sign Language Interpreter.
- Meeting with your mentor on a weekly or biweekly basis to discuss questions related to shadowing.
- Collaborating with an advanced South African Sign Language Interpreter after the shadowing period.
- Participating in quality control of the South African Sign Language Interpreter service.
- Collecting vocabulary and developing terminology.
Job Requirements
Inherent job requirements:
- Advanced Diploma/Bachelor’s degree on NQF level 7 in Sign Language (or at least having Sign Language as a subject up to the 3rd year), which is beneficial.
- Three (3) years of conversational South African Sign Language.
Recommendations:
- Honours/Postgraduate Diploma on NQF level 8 in South African Sign Language.
