x1 Animal Health Technician Post: Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development

Requirements:

An applicant must possess a Grade 12 Certificate and a Degree or National Diploma in Animal Health or a relevant qualification recognized by the South African Qualification Authority and the South African Veterinary Council. Registration with the South African Veterinary Council as an Animal Health Technician. Minimum experience of 2 years (post qualification).

An understanding and experience of erecting, maintaining, and repairing animal disease control fences. Knowledge and experience of controlled animal diseases in South Africa. Supervision experience.

Handgun and rifle competence. Job-related skills: Ability to communicate well and interact with different levels of people. Management and organisation skills. Creativity. Interpersonal skills. Problem solving. Interpretation skills. Analytical skills. Having a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive.

Long working hours. Extensive daily travel. Working in harsh conditions, rough terrain and isolated areas. Exposure to wild animals, e.g. elephants and buffaloes.

Duties:

Maintain fence patrol roads and animal disease control fences. Maintain animal disease fences. Regular patrol and inspection of fences. Coordinate fence repairs and maintenance. Replace worn out fences. Cut and eradicate trees and vegetation along fences. Ensure fencing patrol roads are accessible and thoroughfared. Fill up dongas and drifts. Repair rain flooded patrol roads. Repair trenches and dongas.

Fall trees. Repair floodgates. Assist in the identification of clinical signs of disease in animals. Arrange quarantine for clinically ill stray animals. Monitor and communicate with provincial and other departments, as well as interested stakeholders.

Keep stray animals from crossing disease control fences. Maintain a clear understanding of the directorate’s mandate and primary functions at various forums. Manage the seizure and disposal of animals, materials, or products that are illegal or infectious. Assist with the transportation, procurement, and distribution of fencing materials and equipment through administration and logistics. Requisition of fencing materials and equipment.

Seek quotations for the required goods and services. Provide Tradesman Aid with replacement protective clothing and service equipment. Maintain stock register. Complete trip authorizations and log sheets. Schedule vehicle service in accordance with service intervals. Submit monthly returns to the head office. Managing fencing material on site.

Supervise Tradesmen Aids. Manage general office administration. Simplify and explain policies to Tradesmen Aids. Ensure discipline among subordinates. Conduct staff meetings.

Issue warnings and maintain discipline. Manage leave and complete forms. EPMDS evaluation of Tradesmen Aids. Submit S&T claims for Tradesmen Aids. Report and liaise with supervisor, provincial and other departments.
