About Wits University

The university adopted an anti-discrimination philosophy from the very beginning, which led to intense conflict with the government during apartheid – including police raids and detention of faculty and students.

The university is mainly located in Braamfontein, but it expanded into other parts of the city in the 1960s and 1970s, establishing facilities such as Hillbrow and Parktown in addition to Braamfontein. Sterkfontein and Swartkrans, two farms located about 40 kilometres to the north-west, have also been acquired, which include limestone caves that have proven to be rich in archaeological remains.

Due to its location in Johannesburg, Wits is in close proximity to Africa’s economic powerhouse. The university is one of the founders of the African Research Universities Alliance. The university participates in a wide range of collaborative projects across Africa. Research-intensive, it has played a significant role in healthcare and deep-level mining, but it also performs exceptionally well in fundamental science, such as subatomic physics.
