Johannesburg City Parks is Hiring an Animal Attendant for the Iconic Johannesburg Zoo

As an Animal Attendant, your primary responsibility will be to participate in animal husbandry, including daily care of animals, maintenance of enclosures, and behavior observations.

Key Performance Areas

1. Animal Care
   • Follow animal care procedures as per the animal husbandry manual.
   • Assist in loading/off-loading animal feed.
   • Verify food preparation according to diet sheets.
   • Feed animals and remove leftover food.
   • Handle and assist in restraining problem animals.
   • Assist in hand-rearing and animal training.
   • Monitor temperature-controlled enclosures.
2. Maintenance of Enclosures
   • Disinfect all enclosure areas using animal-friendly products.
   • Perform cleaning and maintenance of equipment and tools.
   • Monitor electric fences to ensure safety and security.
3. Animal Observation and Record Keeping
   • Adhere to collection management policies.
   • Record feeding times, food consumption, faecal observations, births/deaths, and behavioral changes.
   • Provide input into the animal husbandry manual.
4. Enrichment of Animal Lives
   • Provide enrichment for animals as per international standards.
   • Participate in the construction of enrichment structures.
5. Animal Awareness, Conservation, and Protected Areas
   • Participate in environmental awareness and education programs.
   • Assist with capturing, tagging, and herding animals.
   • Ensure regulatory compliance within established guidelines.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4.
• Course on Animal Care/Restraint/Management (an added advantage).
• Minimum 1-2 years of experience in animal care.
