The DTHF Clinical Trials Unit is located at J52, Old Main Building, Groote Schuur Hospital with a community outreach team located in Phillipi Village. It has conducted more than 60 clinical trials in HIV prevention and treatment. A Fieldworker is needed to join our community outreach team. Our LGBT+ Health Division is located within J52 and has participated in several groundbreaking HIV prevention trials.

Full-time position with a one (1) year fixed-term contract at Philippi Village and field work, with attendance at regular Groote Schuur meetings and activities expected. In this position, the Fieldworker will conduct community outreach to recruit individuals who are interested in HIV prevention studies. This Fieldworker position aims to work with LGBT+ communities in Cape Town with a particular focus on transgender communities.

The job requires the planning and attendance of community engagement activities, such as outreach events to improve visibility and awareness of LGBT+ communities, as well as recruitment and retention events for all trials conducted at the J52 Trials Unit. Ideally, the Fieldworker should be a member of the Cape Town transgender community and knowledgeable about the transgender community.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12

  • Experience engaging communities or recruiting candidates for one (1) year

  • Experience planning and managing events for two (2) years

  • An understanding of LGBT+ communities and networks within them

  • Knowledgeable about trans networks in Cape Town or a member

  • Understanding of social media platforms and how to engage on them

  • MS Office proficiency, including data entry

  • A good sense of organization and planning

  • Client-focused (participant-oriented)

  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal) – fluent in English. Fluent in Afrikaans and isiXhosa would be advantageous

  • Ability to work as part of a team

  • Take a proactive approach as an individual

  • Dedicated to details

  • Confidentiality should be maintained during the study

  • Professionalism and ability to work under pressure

  • Ability to work late hours, including weekends

Responsibilities:

  • Visit participants and recruit them

  • Conduct interviews, questionnaires, and transcriptions with participants in order to collect accurate data

  • Provide regular updates to management and staff of the project

  • Keep track of all project administration on a daily basis

  • Answer basic questions and address community groups and individuals.

  • Provide assistance with the planning of recruitment/retention strategies and events

  • Contribute to the implementation of the Community Engagement Plan (CEP) / Community Involvement Work Plan (CIWP)

  • Support the Community Liaison Officer by identifying opportunities for stakeholder engagement, arranging, participating, facilitating, and attending meetings.

  • Coordinate all participant-related information with research site staff

  • Providing diversity training to LGBT+ populations

  • Engage community members in monthly Trans Safe Spaces

  • Participate in community outreach events for representation and visibility, especially in trans networks
