African Feminist Studies (formerly Gender Studies) in the Faculty of Humanities seeks a Lecturer for a permanent position.
A new name has recently been given to the Department of African Feminist Studies, capturing its intellectual, imaginative, and collaborative roots and strengths.
UCT’s The Department of African Feminist Studies in the Faculty of Humanities seeks to fill a permanent post at Lecturer level
As part of the African Gender Institute, the Department provides undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, as well as research and networking opportunities.
Requirements
- Having a PhD degree (completed or in progress) in a Humanities or Social Science discipline with strong ties to African feminist histories and debates
- Knowledge of African queer studies, sexuality, ecofeminisms, feminist economics, or a related field.
- Extensive experience researching feminisms, African-centered issues, and continental intellectual trends.
- Experience in academic teaching, supervision, mentoring, coaching, and administration
- Experience where African feminist issues have been a core part of the work (appropriate to the position).
- An appropriate level and quality of publications for the position
- Developing profiles of continental academics, researchers, and networks
- Activist work in the community
- A desire to strengthen and expand the Department of African Feminist Studies at UCT and beyond.

- Transdisciplinary academic work that bears witness to transdisciplinary interests
- Knowledge of digitally-based intellectual engagement
- Multilingualism as a research/teaching language in South African languages
- Decolonizing higher education discourse and practice in South Africa
- Research interests, including postgraduates’, can be supported by fund-raising
- Participation in academic management, leadership, and university governance
Responsibilities
- Publications in the candidate’s field, as well as research within the field of the position
- Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, convening, and supervision within the department
- Participation in team building and programming within the department
- Contribution to transformation and growth of UCT through Faculty involvement, and other UCT governance constituencies.
